Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?
The target audience for our thriller movie is generally anyone who typically enjoys watching thrillers and perhaps more targeted at late teens to mid-20's. We don't feel as though we could aim product to a particular gender, but perhaps the ideal of an independent female protagonist/antagonist might appeal to young ladies as it isn't as common to see female leads in films as it is male.

Sleeping with the Enemy, Jospeh Ruben -1991, a psychological thriller starring Julia Roberts. This could be related to our product as both feature a strong female lead based around psychological events and happenings.
The total gross domestic income (58.1%) was $101,599,005 and the total gross foreign income (41.9%) was
$73,400,000. Giving a grand total of $174,999,005 Worldwide.

This just shows how popular the film was and that films of the genre with a female lead can be awfully successful.

Another example of a successful psychological thriller with a female lead is Basic Instinct, Paul Voerhoven -1992.  Its total worldwide income is $352,927,224 which obviously indicates that there's a large audience for the sales to be that high. In the first opening weekend, March 20th 1992, in theatres the total income was $15,129,385.

I realise that both of these examples are from over two decades ago and are outdated. An example of a more modern film of the genre is Gone Girl, directed by David Fincher and released in 2014. The film is based off the book, written by  Gillian Flynn. It's total gross income worlwide is at $369,330,363, reaching higher than Sleeping With The Enemy and Basic Instinct. In the opening weekend, Gone Girl managed to draw in 22.4% of their entire income with a huge $37,513,109. A possible reason for the sales being so high is because of the fact that it was a novel beforehand. The reader's of the novel will have been intrigued as to how the movie will compare to the book, therefore bringing in a much wider audience. I think that the general audience for this film was older as the film is an 18 so the majority of teenagers wouldn't have been able to see it. I think it would've been most popular for ages 20-40, specifically middle aged women.

All of the facts and figures found for these films was from www.boxofficemojo.com, I found this source to be reliable as it contains lots of facts, dates and figures which are not likely to be made up. The figures show that it is common for a psychological thriller, that stars a female as the lead, to be popular within the theatres and have large incomes worldwide. Therefore indicating a large spread of the audience across the globe.
